What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a variant of Japanese Judo which fathered Jiu Jitsu. It is a submission based
wrestling style that was developed by the Gracie family in Brazil and brought to Australia in 1989 by
John Will. A history of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu from its inception to its current place in Australia
and the MMA arena can be found on John Will's
site. However the simplest way to describe Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is as a style of Jiu Jitsu based
on technique not strength which makes it possible for a small individual to defeat a much larger
opponent.
What will this K.M.M.A. class do for you?
This class is designed to teach a student what Brazilian Jiu Jitsu really is. The practice will
increase a students' flexibility, confidence and their self defence awareness in training and reality
situations. In order to test their skills students will be able to participate in various submission
wrestling type competitions. Eventually, as a student progresses at their own pace they will be
introduced to newer techniques and possibilities such as MMA style Jiu Jitsu, which incorporates
strikes from dominant positions. And eventually if they wish they will be able to compete in MMA
style competitions.
How Is it Taught?
The class begins with a warm-up and then stretching that is specific to Jiu Jitsu. The actual training
section of the class is done in a group setting under strict supervision. The students practice on
soft foam mats to ensure safety and comfort. Beginning techniques are incorporated in all students
training regimens to accommodate beginners as well as develop more advanced students' individual
style through repetition of basic moves, then later as the individual student advances they are
introduced to the more intricate variants of submissions involved.
How long does it take to learn?
There is no definite time limit or restriction on a students ability to learn the techniques
introduced to them. Every student evolves at their own pace it is possible for a student with only
a basic knowledge to be successful in a situation against an advanced student. Generally, a student
will begin to realise the benefits of their endless wrestling, at around 18 months.
Basically speaking a student gains an amount of skill only equal to the amount of time they put in.
Fitness Level Required
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can be practiced at all fitness levels. The body has its own predetermined limits
and a student learns where their limits are and how far their body can take them.
Before beginning any K.M.M.A. Class students must read and understand the
Student Safety Induction Sheet.
