Kickboxing
What is Kickboxing?
Kickboxing is an ancient form of self defence that originated in Thailand. Ancient Thai warriors were
in need of a system of self defence that could be executed quickly and viciously, thus developed Kickboxing. The Science of the Eight Limbs, the limbs being the fists, knees, elbows and legs, by
incorporating the knees and the elbows like feet and fists the Thai produced one of the most vicious
styles of self defence known to man. Competitions arose all over Thailand all with one goal in mind,
to find the best fighter in all of Thailand. These competitions have changed very little and the
style used in these fights is a more competitive style of kickboxing known as Muay Thai. Kickboxing is also the most
utilised style of stand up fighting in MMA events because of its effectiveness.
What will this K.M.M.A. class do for you?
This class teaches hand and leg striking combinations, in which standard boxing
techniques are incorporated with elbow, knee, and kicking strikes. Speed and
power will be developed through the proper body mechanics; these mechanics will increase a student’s
overall flexibility and fitness. It will also instil self discipline into the student by helping them
to realise what they are capable of, in turn creating self confidence.
How is it Taught?
Training begins with general stretching and some cardio exercises to get the students warmed up. Afterwards the
students will be introduced to techniques, the techniques are practiced individually so they can be
critiqued, later techniques will be practiced using striking equipment eg. kick shields and focus pads,
so the student can work combinations in pairs and feel the
amount of power they are developing. Light sparring is incorporated, but only if the student decides that they
would like to participate, during all of the exercises of the class strict supervision is adhered to
for safety purposes.
What are your obligations while attending this class?
Students are asked to be present at the club facility 15 minutes before the class begins, this time is
used for the newer students to read and sign the safety introduction sheet to get an understanding of
their obligations to themselves and their training partners. The signatures are simply a way to see
that the student read the sheet and understood it; it is also a way to keep track of attendance for
emergency situations and for future grading. It must be understood, that students are NOT required
to spar, the student can train to get fit. The sparring is used as a way to get a student used to
real situations they may encounter especially if they later seek to compete in kickboxing competitions.
